Grant 53, Napier 56, Davidson 57, McLaren 78

A rampant Forfar Farmington won their first league game of the season on Sunday at Maud Pleasure Park when they dismantled Buchan to move off the bottom of the SWPL table.

After last week’s cup victory, Forfar were forced into three starting changes changes, with Megan Burns, Caren Webster, Kayleigh Noble and sub Cheryl Kilcoyne all missing. Amy Gallacher and Jade McLaren returned to the starting line up, Murron White was promoted from the bench whilst Alex Russell, Erin Cattanach and 15 year old debutant Sally Patterson took places on the bench.

The game started off evenly, with the first chance coming in the third minute, Holly Napier setting up last week’s hat-trick hero Nicky Grant but she could only fire straight at Jodie Kennedy. Buchan had their first chance two minutes later, Leanne Reid hitting the sidenetting.

Napier also shot wide in the 6th minute before Reid threatened again for the Maud outfit, her long range effort failing to threaten Fiona McNicoll. In quick succession Alana Bruce and Lindsey Dunbar went wide, at the other end Lydia Johnston forced McNicoll into a good one handed save from the edge of the penalty area after 17 minutes.

Farmington were unlucky not to have taken the lead 24 minutes into the first half, Bruce supplying a cross for Nicky Grant, whose header smashed off the crossbar and went over. Laura Parsley swung a corner in two minutes later that caused problems, firstly Kayleigh Brough’s header was punched out but a ball back in was met by Gallacher and she could only nod towards the keeper.

Johnston blasted wide again on the half hour mark while Bruce found Grant with a long ball, Grant flashing a half volley across the face of goal. Sixty seconds later Gallacher collected the ball on the left flank before waltzing past four defenders but the effort at the end of it was saved well by Kennedy.

Gallacher had another chance in the 43rd minute, Davidson smartly threading the ball through for her, although Gallacher fired just over. Bruce created another opportunity on the stroke of half time, terrorising the left back again before sending a cross in that was cleared towards Napier, who struck straight at Kennedy.

HALF TIME: Buchan 0 Forfar Farmington 0

Forfar came out for the second half as strong as they finished the first, tormenting Buchan at every opportunity they had. Nicola Davidson and Amy Gallacher combined to flick the ball on for Laura Parsley to fire towards the keeper.

Alana Bruce’s long range strike was pushed away by Kennedy, Lindsey Dunbar doing the same a minute later with Parsley slicing wide afterwards. At the opposite end Michelle Sutherland blasted over as Buchan struggled to get into the game in the second half.

Farmington took the lead in the 53rd minute, Davidson spraying the ball out wide to Parsley and she swung in a great ball for Nicky GRANT to sweep home at the back post for her fourth in two games.

Three minutes later the lead was doubled, another cross, this time from Bruce, was met by a great header from Holly NAPIER, giving the keeper no chance.

Sixty seconds after that the side had grabbed their third goal in four minutes, excellent work from Parsley saw the ball go towards Dunbar, she left the ball for the advancing DAVIDSON who hit the ball first time from 30 yards, the effort flying into the net with Kennedy nowhere near it.

After 64 minutes Parsley fired wide before Dunbar had a header from her cross blocked by a defender as they looked to further consolidate their lead. Gallacher curled a free kick from around 10 yards out just over the bar before Dunbar had another chance blocked on the edge of the box, being set up by Gallacher and Bruce.

With twelve minutes remaining Farmington scored again, Napier swinging a free kick in from the left and Jade McLAREN scored her second of the season as she bulleted a header home at the back post.

Five minutes later Leanne Reid fluffed a free kick on the edge of the box and Fiona McNicoll gathered with ease. Michelle Sutherland also sent her effort wide from long range as Buchan tried to at least get a consolation in the dying stages of the game.

The final whistle went not long after, confirming Farmington’s first league win of the season, taking them up to 10th above Buchan and Queen’s Park.

After the game Paul White said ‘I’m overwhelmed, that’s our first league win of the season, it’s been a long, hard start to it. The girls are playing well in a lot of games but today I felt they got their rewards. It was pretty tight out there, Buchan put on a good show too, we both had chances in the first half, we came out and dominated possession. Once we got our first goal ten minutes into the second half everything just fell into place from then, it took the pressure off the girls and settled them down. I think overall we deserved the result and clean sheet today, I’m very, very pleased.’
